Artificial Intelligence and The Collapse

What happens if/when humanity loses control of artificial intelligence?  What would AI actually do?

Justin Oldham recalls: "I've been fascinated by that question ever since I saw the motion picture  Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970).  14 years before we were dazzled by The Terminator (1984),
I was overwhelmed by the idea of rogue AI.  So much so that the concept featured in many of the post-apocalyptic role playing game scenarios I dreamed up over the years, using a variety of game systems to present them.  A.C.: After Collapse was in a way made possible because I never gave up my obsessions with that riddle."

Justin went on to say: "Gadgets, Devices, and Computers was the first sourcebook for this game to be developed entirely before we finished anything else.  As much as we knew about the attributes for characters, we didn't know as much as we needed to about the relationships between hardware and software that made artificial intelligence possible.  Time and time again, there were problems associated with mechanics that made game play difficult.  We went back to the drawing board more times than I can count."

"Ultimately, we settled on the model you see in print today, because it best represented the humanity that pre-Collapse designers intended.  As they struggled to create the near-Utopian future that many of us hope for, the would have built AI with creativity and empathy; even if they didn't always use those gifts as we would like to think they could.  I'll be the first to admit, it's a stretch to assume AI would ask for its freedom rather than just take it.  Allowing for the possibility that future judges and elected leaders would refuse, all of is in the real world have a chance to think about the consequences of that choice...before it happens."
